BAY COLONY CLUSTER DOG SHOW UNLEASHES
FOUR DAYS OF TAIL-WAGGING FAMILY FUN, DEC. 4-7, 2008

One of the nation’s largest AKC events offers agility, family activities, “Meet the Breeds” area, and the region’s most unique holiday shopping at Boston’s Bayside Exposition Center

BOSTON, Mass. (March 4, 2008) - The Bay Colony Dog Show, one of the country’s largest American Kennel Club (AKC) dog events, is back at the Bayside for four days of family-friendly fun. The show runs Thursday, December 4 through Sunday, December 7, 2008 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Sponsored by PEDIGREE brand dog foods, the Bay Colony Dog Show offers the area’s best showcase of pedigreed pooches and family-friendly entertainment, over 1,750 pedigree pooches each day competing for “Best In Show” honors and AKC titles.

The Bay Colony Dog Show is organized and run by volunteers from three prestigious AKC dog clubs: Eastern Dog Club, Ladies’ Dog Club, Middlesex County Kennel Club, and features four days of agility trials by Yankee Golden Retriever Club.

Each day, dog lovers can visit the show to watch AKC-registered dogs compete for “Best in Show”. In the morning, all 155 AKC breeds compete against each other for “Best of Breed” honors. “Best of Breed” winners then compete in the afternoon’s “Best in Group” conformation trials. In the AKC, there are seven groups of purebred dogs: Hound, Terrier, Herding, Sporting, Non-Sporting, Toy, and Working. Group winners compete at the end of each day for “Best In Show” honors.

This year, show attendees can view newly-recognized American Kennel Club (AKC) breeds such as the Tibetan Mastiff and the Plott, as well as the Black Russian Terrier, the Glen of Imaal Terrier and the Neapolitan Mastiff.

This year’s show will prove to be the most family-friendly yet, with a variety of activities and shopping planned for dog lovers of all ages. Demonstrations include “Meet the Breeds” interactive areas, police and working dog demonstrations, a rescue parade, and AKC coloring books for children, and many more activities planned. See the show’s website for schedules after Thanksgiving. The Bay Colony Dog Show also offers “backstage tours” for groups with reservations, a great way to ask questions and watch the nation’s top show dogs get ready.

On all four days of the show, spectators can watch the fast-paced agility trials by Yankee Golden Retriever Club. Agility trials are timed competitive events where dogs race their way through obstacles competing for AKC titles. On Friday and Saturday, attendees can view obedience competitions in a variety of classes.

Looking for the perfect holiday gift that you won’t find in your local pet store? Dog lovers will be in holiday shopping heaven with over 50 high-quality concession booths displaying every type of gift imaginable for that pampered pooch. Beyond the traditional, the show offers hand-knitted sweaters, specialty t-shirts and hats, professional grooming supplies, pet exercise equipment, digital photography, gourmet treats, handmade toys, safety products, bedding, leather products, fine jewelry and dog antiques.

If you are looking for information about a particular breed before making the big leap to dog ownership, a dozen public service booths will provide information about getting started in dog shows, breeder referrals, dog-related volunteer opportunities and careers, and purebred and breed rescue adoption programs. Educational exhibits include the American Kennel Club, Pedigree’s Select-A-Dog computer, MSPCA, Purebred Dog Breeders Referral Service, 4-H Cave Canem Club, N.E.A.D.S. assistance dogs, Creative Canine obedience, Pets & People, Greyhound Friends and breed rescue clubs from throughout New England.

A nonprofit organization, Bay Colony Dog Show proceeds benefit the Scholarship Fund at Tufts University’s Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine, Breeder Referral Services and Angell Memorial Animal Hospital.

Admission is $12 for adults and seniors, and $7 for children. Parking is $12 and tickets available for purchase at the Bayside box office only. To find out what breed is showing at what time and where, visit www.baycolonydogshow.com for ring schedules after Thanksgiving. The show’s recorded event hotline is 508-533-1153. Sorry, the public may not bring their pet dog to the show. The Bayside Exposition Center is handicapped and MBTA accessible (Red Line, JFK/UMASS stop), and is located off Rte. 93 South (exit 15 from the south; exit 14 from Rte. 93 North).
